Bell Textron has secured a $33.64-million contract to upgrade the structural and power systems of the US Marine Corps’ AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters, increasing their capacity to support future weapons, sensors, and other advanced mission systems.
The Structural and Power Improvements for Next-Generation Effects (SPINE) Phase III contract includes A-kits and D-kits, power generation components, drivetrain assemblies, and associated materials, labor, and spares.
Most of the work will be carried out in Fort Worth, Texas, with completion expected by July 2028.
According to Bell Textron, SPINE provides a complete overhaul of the H-1 fleet’s power supply by replacing the aircraft’s existing subsystems with an advanced, scalable electrical architecture.
“This will enable the rapid integration of current and future technologies while simultaneously enhancing the fleet’s capabilities in offensive and multi-role missions,” the manufacturer added.
“SPINE is the gateway to the A-series functions that enable the integration of network-enabled weapon systems and data links.”
Upgraded Platform
The AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter and UH-1Y Venom utility helicopter form the backbone of the US Marine Corps’ rotary-wing fleet. The two aircraft share more than 84 percent of their components, simplifying maintenance and logistics.
Earlier this year, Bell delivered the first SPINE-upgraded AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, for testing.
The Phase III award marks the program’s transition from testing to fielding upgrade kits as the Marine Corps moves toward fleet-wide SPINE integration.
The program lays the foundation for integrating advanced data buses, Link 16 connectivity, improved defensive systems, enhanced mission computers, and network-enabled weapons.
Once fully implemented, the upgrades will enable the helicopters to support long-range precision weapons, air-launched effects, and advanced electronic warfare systems, expanding their role in distributed and networked operations.
