Diehl Defence has opened a new battery production facility in Germany to increase output of critical power systems used in missiles, fuzes, and other equipment.
The new Battery Tech Hub at the company’s Röthenbach site expands production of special batteries used across Diehl’s missile and ammunition portfolio. Diehl Energy Products, the company’s subsidiary, will operate the facility.
The site includes about 7,000 square meters (75,347 square feet) of manufacturing, development, and logistics space, plus 3,700 square meters (39,826 square feet) of offices.
Diehl said stronger-than-expected demand prompted the company to add extra production space during construction, increasing capacity for igniter and thermal batteries.
“With the Battery Tech Hub, we are strengthening a key component of our air defense systems and ammunition,” CEO Helmut Rauch said.
The Battery Tech Hub is part of Diehl’s broader 1.5-billion-euro ($1.7-billion) investment program to modernize and expand production across its sites.
Europe Expands Defense Hubs
Diehl Defence’s latest investment comes as European defense manufacturers continue opening and expanding sites to meet growing military demand.
In June, Rheinmetall, ERC System, and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia partnered to establish production of the Victor U250 heavy-lift drone in western Germany.
The same month, UAE defense group EDGE said it would establish an engineering and manufacturing hub in Bordeaux as part of its newly launched European subsidiary in France, expanding its industrial presence across the continent.
The move follows EDGE’s January agreement with Spain’s Indra Group to create a joint defense manufacturing venture in Spain focused on loitering munitions and smart weapons.
