India has established its first dedicated Department of Military Medicine at Central Command Hospital in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, creating a specialized site for combat medical research, training, and operational healthcare for the armed forces.
Inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the hub will provide “indigenous doctrines and specialized expertise” on military trauma, combat psychiatry, environmental and disaster medicine, military medical logistics, CBRN response, emergency and critical care, and humanitarian assistance.
It will also advance telemedicine, simulation-based rehearsals, extended field care, automated medical decision support, and data analytics.
New Delhi said that the department will be developed in phases, beginning with an academic curriculum before expanding into centers of excellence.
It will also introduce postgraduate programs for more complex courses, increasing its education offerings for future military medical professionals.
The center will be supervised by the Indian Armed Forces’ Directorate General of Medical Services.
“Our soldiers are deployed in some of the world’s most complex regions and harshest climates, exposed to diverse challenges,” Singh said.
“This new department will develop medical protocols tailored for these operational environments.”
Driving Modern Field Solutions
At the ceremony, Singh also urged wider field use of artificial intelligence, wearable devices, predictive analytics, and advanced diagnostics to further maintain care support for warfighters amid evolving warfare.
“Preventive healthcare is directly linked to combat readiness and national security,” the minister explained.
“We can leverage technologies… to enhance real-time monitoring of soldiers’ health and the early identification of potential health risks.”
