US Army Opens First 3D-Printed Barracks at Fort Bliss
The US Army has opened the first of 10 barracks being built with large-scale 3D-printing technology at Fort Bliss, Texas, marking its largest robotic construction project to date.
The initiative is part of a program designed to replace temporary accommodations with permanent facilities for rotating military personnel.
Construction of the remaining barracks is expected to be completed by September.
The project includes 10 open-bay transient barracks capable of housing up to 560 service members.
Each building spans 5,772 square feet (536 square meters), with the full development covering roughly 78,000 square feet (7,247 square meters).
According to the army, the structures were completed at around four times the pace of conventional construction while reducing costs by 9.3 percent compared with standard military construction benchmarks.
The service said the buildings are designed to improve energy efficiency, increase durability, and lower long-term maintenance costs.
Supporting Border Mission
The initiative expands on a 2024 pilot program at Fort Bliss, where two similar 3D-printed buildings were constructed and later put into service.
Initially, the new barracks will accommodate personnel from Task Force Bastogne assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border under Operation Ardent Vanguard, which supports security operations along the US southern border.
Once that mission concludes, the facilities will remain part of Fort Bliss’ permanent infrastructure, providing housing for units rotating through the installation for future training and operational deployments.
