KNDS has introduced an updated version of its Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 main battle tank concept at a defense convention in France, highlighting an unmanned turret design and a reduced three-person crew for future tank operations.
The German-French company’s self-funded prototype centers on a remote-controlled turret with a new gun mounting architecture that elevates the weapon from the hull’s upper surface.
The design frees internal space, reduces protected volume, and lowers overall weight, optimizing maneuverability as well as weapon and ammunition changes.
It also features a foldable structure to enable compact rail transport of the vehicle.
Building on Proven Tank System
The Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 supports multiple gun calibers, including 120-millimeter, 130-millimeter, and 140-millimeter systems, allowing flexibility for future armament upgrades.
KNDS also placed greater emphasis on counter-drone capabilities, integrating advanced secondary weapons to address emerging autonomous threats in the sky.
Moreover, the vehicle’s digital capability supports enhanced connectivity, preparing it for networked battlefield operations.
The tank is 8 meters (26 feet) in length, has a width of 4 meters (13 feet), a height of 2 meters (7 feet), and weighs less than 60 tons (54,431 kilograms).
It is fitted with a 1,500-horsepower engine for a speed of 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour and a range of 460 kilometers (286 miles).
“This new concept builds on the successful foundation of one of the world’s most successful main battle tanks,” KNDS said.
“Currently, the LEOPARD 2 is under contract with 24 nations worldwide and with the continued investments into new technologies, it is set to continue its unique success story.”
