Austrian defense manufacturer STI Steyr is competing for one of Vienna’s largest military vehicle procurements, offering its Light Multi-Mission Vehicle (LMV-X) and Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV-X) platforms for a program valued at nearly 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion).
Under the broader program, the Austrian Armed Forces plan to acquire “several thousand vehicles” across eight categories, including light and heavy armored vehicles, scouting systems, and infantry transport vehicles, according to Militär Aktuell.
Bid assessments are expected to be facilitated in the coming weeks in preparation for negotiations and corresponding deals.
The competition also includes several international manufacturers, with technical capability, delivery timelines, industrial participation, and long-term support expected to weigh alongside cost in the final decision.
Offering Future-Proof Systems
STI Steyr said it is promoting the LMV-X and LTV-X as a family of modular vehicles that can support multiple missions using a common fleet.
The proposal is positioned to simplify logistics, reduce life-cycle costs, and make future upgrades easier.
The company highlighted that the platforms are built with upgradeable architecture to adapt to future communications systems, sensors, electronic warfare equipment, counter-drone capabilities, and other emerging technologies.
STI Steyr also emphasized the industrial benefits of a domestic award, saying it would carry out end-to-end production in Austria while investing about 30 million euros ($34.2 million) and collaborating with local suppliers if selected.
Beyond the contract, STI Steyr views the program as a potential springboard for exports as European defense spending increases.
“Today, a military vehicle must be designed not only to meet current requirements but also to accommodate those of the coming decades,” the company said.
