Rheinmetall and ICEYE’s joint venture is set to develop space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for Germany.
The initiative brings together several other German space technology companies, including Reflex Aerospace, OroraTech, ConstellR, and LiveEO, to integrate satellite imagery, data processing, and intelligence analysis into a common architecture.
The announcement comes as European governments work to build independent intelligence-gathering capabilities and reduce reliance on non-European providers for space-based military data.
Integrating Commercial Space Tech
The joint venture will combine Earth-observation sensors, data analytics, command-support tools, and other technologies into a unified ISR framework intended to support military decision-making across multiple domains, including land, air, sea, cyber, and space.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said the project is intended to connect existing German technologies into a single operational system capable of supporting defense requirements.
The effort builds on earlier work to deploy German space-based capabilities and expands cooperation among European space technology providers.
ICEYE, headquartered in Finland, operates a constellation of synthetic aperture radar satellites capable of collecting imagery regardless of weather conditions or daylight.
The company has supplied satellite intelligence products to several governments and has supported Ukraine with radar imagery since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The venture said it will pursue an open architecture designed to incorporate additional technologies and partners over time, with the goal of establishing a scalable ISR platform to support Germany’s and Europe’s long-term defense requirements.
