Northrop, Apex to Demonstrate Space-Based Interceptors for Golden Dome
Northrop Grumman has selected satellite manufacturer Apex to support its efforts to demonstrate space-based interceptor capabilities as part of a US Space Force initiative central to the administration’s Golden Dome missile defense program.
The collaboration advances government efforts to build a future network of space-based interceptors capable of countering missile threats from orbit.
Northrop Grumman will draw on its missile defense technology portfolio, manufacturing capabilities, and artificial intelligence-enabled systems as it develops and demonstrates interceptor concepts.
Apex will provide satellite platform expertise to support the effort.
Space-Based Interceptors and Golden Dome
Northrop Grumman is one of 12 firms selected by the US Space Force to develop space-based interceptor concepts for Golden Dome, one of the most ambitious elements of the Trump administration’s missile defense initiative.
The program envisions a layered architecture capable of detecting and engaging ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missile threats from orbit.
The concept has gained renewed attention as the US explores options for strengthening homeland missile defense against increasingly sophisticated threats.
Northrop Grumman has completed a series of ground-based tests this year and plans to demonstrate an on-orbit capability in 2027, funding the effort as part of a broader investment in missile defense technologies.
Apex CEO Ian Cinnamon said the company’s satellite platforms are designed to support the large-scale constellations a Golden Dome network would require.
“Apex was founded specifically to support proliferated constellations like Golden Dome, which will require satellites to create a decisive defensive advantage for our nation. This partnership will enable operational, constellation-scale space-based missile defense and allow us to rapidly support an urgent need,” Cinnamon said.
While space-based missile tracking systems are already being developed, operational interceptor systems in orbit remain in the demonstration and evaluation stage.
