US Navy Receives First ICS-Enabled Aegis Combat System Baseline

Lockheed Martin has delivered the first Integrated Combat System (ICS)-enabled baseline to the US Navy, marking a step in the service’s effort to standardize and modernize software and combat capabilities across its surface fleet.

The package, designated Aegis BL9.C3.0, combines existing Aegis combat system functions with updated software infrastructure designed to support faster and more frequent capability updates.

Under the plan, software updates and certifications would be released on a six-month cycle, allowing new sensors, weapons, and software functions to be integrated more rapidly across multiple ship classes.

“Each baseline upgrade delivered and integrated into the ICS further reinforces and expands the already proven Aegis integrated air and missile defense capability,” said Lockheed VP of Multi‑Domain Combat Systems Chandra Marshall.

The baseline was developed using the Navy’s Forge software development environment and introduces a re-architected display component and Tactical Platform as a Service framework intended to support containerized software applications.

Common Combat Architecture

The delivery is part of a broader US Navy initiative aimed at creating greater commonality between surface combatants by moving toward a shared combat system architecture. 

Lockheed Martin said future baseline releases will incrementally add new operational capabilities while reducing the need for separate development efforts across different platforms.

The Aegis combat system is the US Navy’s primary integrated air and missile defense system and is deployed aboard guided missile destroyers and cruisers. 

It has also been exported to allied navies including Japan, South Korea, Spain, and Australia.
