Navantia has completed the first static dive of the S-82 Narciso Monturiol, marking another milestone in Spain’s S-80 submarine program.
The test took place near the La Algameca Naval Base in Cartagena as part of the submarine’s sea trials.
Conducted by Navantia personnel and the trials crew, the exercise evaluated the hull’s behavior, ballast tank flooding, and the vessel’s static stability before it proceeds to submerged navigation trials.
“The S-80 program is already making a significant contribution to the strategic autonomy of Spain’s submarine force and to the technological capabilities of our industrial ecosystem,” Navantia Chairman Ricardo Domínguez said.
S-80 Program Reaches Key Milestones
Development of the S-80 series has accelerated over the past two years as Navantia moves the remaining submarines through construction and testing.
In June, Navantia installed the S-83 Cosme Garcia’s diesel generator sets, a major step toward integrating its hybrid propulsion system that combines diesel-electric power with the indigenous air-independent propulsion system designed to extend underwater endurance.
In November 2025, Navantia launched the S-82 Narciso Monturiol before it entered the harbor testing phase, where engineers began verifying onboard systems, propulsion, batteries, and other key components before sea trials.
Earlier, in November 2023, the lead boat S81 Isaac Peral was officially commissioned into the Spanish Navy after completing extensive sea trials.
