The American Center for Manufacturing and Innovation (ACMI) has expanded its National Security Industrial Hub (NSIH) in Indiana from 1,100 acres to more than 1,500 acres (445 to 607 hectares).
New tenants and the expansion of an existing defense manufacturer drove the increase in the campus’ size.
According to ACMI, the project is now the largest aerospace and defense development in Indiana.
The campus is being built adjacent to the Crane Army Ammunition Activity and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, a major US Navy center for weapons research, testing, and logistics.
Construction of the campus began earlier this year.
For the company, the Indiana site is the first implementation of its National Security Industrial Hub model, which is designed to provide shared manufacturing infrastructure for defense firms and increase US production capacity for munitions, aerospace systems, and other national security technologies.
Expanding Production Capacity
ACMI said the additional space will accommodate the company’s headquarters and production facilities.
SPINNER North America will establish an advanced manufacturing facility equipped with computer numerical control machine tools and automation systems.
The firm will provide machining, engineering, process development, and production support to other companies operating across the campus, helping them move from prototype development to large-scale manufacturing.
Aerospace company iRocket will also establish testing and development facilities focused on solid rocket motors and fully reusable launch vehicle technologies.
Meanwhile, Prometheus Energetics, which had previously announced plans to locate at the campus, is expanding its footprint from 600 acres (243 hectares) to 700 acres (283 hectares).
“The United States has no shortage of innovation, what it lacks is production capacity at scale and that’s what we are delivering on with this expansion of NSIH,” said David Dowell, Chief Executive Officer of ACMI Properties.
“We are setting the physical foundation necessary to close the critical production gap for munitions, supply chains, and components essential for national security.”
