Lockheed Martin has secured a $2.9-billion contract to manufacture Sentinel A4 radars for the US Army.
The deal covers the production and related engineering work to build the systems for the effort.
Activities for the development will be facilitated at various sites, with each location to be determined upon order placement.
The initiative is expected to run through June 2031.
Progress will be coordinated with the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, which holds oversight of the contract.
Delivering ‘Uninterrupted Execution’
The Sentinel A4 radar uses digital processing and solid-state antenna modules based on gallium nitride transmitters.
Its architecture is derived from Raytheon’s legacy AN/MPQ-6A3 electronically steered 3D radar, which relays precise early-warning and target-tracking data for short-range air defense systems.
The Sentinel A4 expands the awareness capability of its successor by being operable in fixed and mobile configurations across signal-denied environments.
It can also monitor threats beyond manned and unmanned aircraft, detecting rockets, artillery, and mortar systems at extended range while identifying their origin and point of impact.
Washington awarded the first Sentinel A4 development contract to Lockheed in 2019, with the low-rate initial production units delivered in 2026.
“Sentinel A4 is the US Army Program of Record solution designed to meet Air and Missile Defense performance requirements for the next 40 years,” Lockheed said in its Sentinel product portal.
“Built with an open architecture, the Sentinel A4 adapts to challenging environments, which protects the soldier and supports the uninterrupted execution of the mission.”
