The US Army has established a dedicated Space Operations Branch, creating a permanent career field for military personnel who integrate space capabilities into multi-domain operations.
Under the initiative, the new branch brings together the army’s existing Functional Area 40A Space Operations Officers and the newly created 40D Military Occupational Specialty for enlisted Tactical Space Operations Specialists.
The organization is intended to provide a unified structure for personnel supporting satellite-enabled communications, navigation, targeting, missile warning, and other space-based capabilities used by ground forces.
Specialists for Space Capabilities
Until now, the US Army has relied on enlisted personnel temporarily assigned from branches including Air Defense Artillery, Signal, and Military Intelligence to perform space-related missions.
Under the new structure, soldiers will instead have a dedicated career path with standardized training, professional development, and promotion opportunities.
“For too long, enlisted soldiers with specialized space training and experience rotated through critical space assignments, eventually returning to their basic branches,” stated Lt. Gen. John L. Rafferty, commanding general of US Army Space and Missile Defense Command.
“The rotational system served the US Army well in the past but will not meet the demands of the future, which requires a professional and sustainable approach to training, career progression and leader development for Army Space Soldiers.”
Expanding Space Missions
The new branch will be supported by the Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence, which provides training and education for army and joint-force space operators.
The initiative also advances Army Space Vision 2024, supporting the expansion of the service’s space workforce and dedicated capabilities as the US responds to growing competition in the space domain from rivals including Russia and China.
“Space is no longer a benign environment and enabler, but a battlefield,” said Col. Felix Torres, commandant, Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence.
