Shield AI Buys Aechelon to Fuse Simulation and Autonomy Tech
Shield AI has completed its acquisition of military simulation specialist Aechelon Technology, adding one of the defense sector’s synthetic training and modeling providers to its growing autonomy business.
The deal brings together Shield AI’s Hivemind autonomous flight software and Aechelon’s high-fidelity simulation technologies, which are used across a range of US military programs, including the Pentagon’s Joint Simulation Environment.
Aechelon specializes in visual simulation, physics-based sensor modeling, and synthetic reality technologies used for military training and mission rehearsal.
“By bringing Aechelon in-house, we can connect simulation, autonomy, and deployment into that cycle and deliver more capable manned-unmanned teaming to our customers, and to the warfighters and allies who depend on them, faster than ever before,” Shield AI CEO Gary Steele said.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The transaction follows Shield AI’s recently completed $2-billion financing package, including $1.5 billion in Series G funding and $500 million in preferred equity financing, which valued the company at $12.7 billion.
Acquisitions Focused on AI Autonomy
Shield AI’s purchase of Aechelon is part of a broader trend of defense companies acquiring firms with expertise in AI and unmanned systems.
In June, Australia’s Electro Optic Systems acquired MARSS’ defense business, bringing together EOS’ remote weapon stations and directed energy systems with MARSS’ NiDAR platform, which uses AI and sensor fusion to coordinate responses to threats across multiple domains.
In May, Elbit Systems subsidiary FUSE acquired Bluewhite Robotics, adding AI-enabled autonomous robotics expertise for defense and off-road applications.
Earlier, in January, Magnet Defense completed its acquisition of Metal Shark, strengthening its position in AI-enabled maritime systems and supporting future unmanned fleet programs.
