Rheinmetall’s StrikeShield APS to Get Indra Group’s Nemus AESA Radar

Indra Group is set to integrate its Nemus active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar into Rheinmetall’s StrikeShield active protection system (APS) for military vehicles. 

This comes as part of a newly signed agreement between the two companies that collaborated in recent years to enhance the radar’s performance and advance its technological maturity to effectively counter emerging threats. 

Nemus can simultaneously detect extremely slow targets, such as drones flying at 10 meters (33 feet) per second, and track high-velocity threats traveling at speeds exceeding 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) per second.

These capabilities enable Nemus to be used for several missions, including countering drones and short-range air defense, as well as intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance. 

The AESA radar can also be integrated into APS for armored vehicles and battle tanks like the Leopard

“This partnership combines our technological expertise, allowing us to establish a strong basis for future system enhancements and maximum survivability in the context of rapidly changing threat scenarios,” said Martin Debo, Head of Product Unit Active Protection Systems at Rheinmetall.

StrikeShield

Rheinmetall’s StrikeShield is a modular and hard-kill APS that combines active and passive protection and emits a very small electronic signature that reduces detection risk.

It detects and destroys incoming threats — including light antitank weapons, guided missiles, and certain improvised explosive devices — using directed energy before they hit the vehicle.  

Designed to minimize system weight and power consumption, StrikeShield is mainly integrated on the Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles.

It has also been tested on the US Army’s Stryker armored fighting vehicles, although the service abandoned pursuing StrikeShield for Stryker due to size, weight, and performance challenges.
