Northrop Grumman, Boeing Demo First MQ-4C Triton, P-8 Poseidon Teaming
Northrop Grumman and Boeing have demonstrated the first automated crewed-uncrewed teaming between the MQ-4C Triton drone and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
The jointly funded technology demonstration saw the uncrewed Triton and piloted Poseidon exchange maritime intelligence through a standardized machine-to-machine interface using artificial intelligence (AI) and an open systems architecture.
In the process, the high-altitude long-endurance drone used AI algorithms to respond to the patrol aircraft’s request, enhancing automated interoperability between the two platforms for maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and anti-surface warfare missions.
Enhancing Interoperability
The demonstration relied on the Universal Command and Control Interface, a standardized machine-to-machine collaboration protocol based on the Open Mission Systems and Autonomy – Government Reference Architecture.
Using the interface, Triton can exchange mission data with other compatible platforms beyond the P-8A, allowing operators to rapidly integrate systems while reducing associated costs.
“MQ-4C Triton and P-8A are the backbone of the US Navy’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance force, delivering complementary capabilities unmatched by any other platforms,” said Jane Bishop, VP and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s Global Surveillance Division.
She added that the demonstration reflects the company’s continued investment in advanced technologies to maintain an operational advantage against evolving maritime threats.
Apart from the US Navy, the Triton drone is also in service with the Royal Australian Air Force and has been considered for acquisition by NATO.
Meanwhile, Boeing P-8 Program VP Tory Peterson said the demonstration delivers practical interoperability benefits for existing and future P-8 operators, allowing them to expand mission effectiveness through “low-risk, evolutionary enhancements.”
