Europe’s first maintenance and sustainment center for the M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Common Fire Control System (CFCS) is moving forward in Finland.
Lockheed Martin is collaborating with Finnish technology firm Insta to open the facility at Insta’s Tampere site, building on a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2025 during the rollout ceremony of Finland’s first F-35A fighter.
The effort is aimed at strengthening national expertise, supply chain security, and operational readiness of both the MLRS and the M142 HIMARS, while creating readiness to provide sustainment services to other system operators across NATO partners in Europe.
The facility is expected to improve system availability by providing lifecycle planning, spare parts support, technical assistance, and obsolescence management.
“Our partnership with Insta creates Europe’s first dedicated CFCS sustainment centre in Finland, expanding M270A2 and HIMARS support across the continent,” said Gaylia Campbell, VP and general manager, Lockheed Martin Tactical Missiles.
Rocket Launchers
Lockheed Martin manufactures the M270A2 MLRS, a tracked heavy rocket launcher designed for high-intensity combat.
The wheeled, air-transportable, and lighter HIMARS — derived from the MLRS — was later developed to be used for rapid deployment, expeditionary forces, and tight terrain.
Both systems fire the same munitions, such as GMLRS rockets and Precision Strike Missiles, and feature a rapid shoot-and-scoot capability to evade counter-battery fire.
