Nigeria has inaugurated a Wargaming Center at the Army War College in the capital Abuja to improve force preparation in response to evolving security threats.
Army War College Commandant Maj. Gen. Umar Alkali said the facility will support both practical and computer-assisted simulations, allowing troops to refine campaign plans, analyze troop deployment options, and identify alternative responses.
The site blends land, maritime, air, cyber, and information operations into joint training scenarios to improve interoperability across the Nigerian Armed Forces.
In addition to officer training, the hub will help the military define new concepts, research new combat techniques, and further develop fighting doctrine.
It includes two wargaming halls, four exercise rooms, three theater laboratories, 10 breakout rooms, a central conference room, a library, and a digital server room.
Pushing for ‘Strategically Minded’ Leaders
Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu led the opening ceremony, describing it as a “major investment” in professional military education and the institutional sector.
He added that the facility would optimize the military leaders’ capacity to anticipate risks, weigh contingencies, and implement approaches before crises emerge.
“The increasingly complex and dynamic security environment demands commanders who are not only courageous on the battlefield but also intellectually agile, strategically minded and capable of making sound decisions under pressure,” Shaibu stated.
