The US Navy has awarded Raytheon a $515-million follow-on contract for the integration and production support of the SPY-6 family of radars on US and German warships.
The award follows a $536-million contract issued in June 2025 and includes upgrading the US Navy’s Flight IIA destroyers with the SPY-6(V)4 radar variant.
Also covered is the future integration and support of the SPY-6 radar on Germany’s planned F127 air defense frigates, with the option to add other countries that select the system.
“With over a decade of demonstrated success at sea, SPY-6 remains the US Navy’s most advanced maritime radar, providing the fleet with unmatched sensing power and multi-mission readiness to counter evolving threats,” Raytheon Naval Power President Barbara Borgonovi said.
“Backed by an $800 million investment to modernize our radar manufacturing facilities, we’re accelerating production and are expecting to double SPY‑6 output by 2028.”

SPY-6 Radar
The SPY-6 radar family comprises four variants that provide 360-degree coverage against cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, aircraft, surface threats, and electronic attacks.
Built around scalable Radar Module Assemblies (RMAs), the SPY-6(V)1 for Flight III destroyers features four arrays with 37 RMAs each, while the SPY-6(V)4 for Flight IIA destroyers uses four arrays with 24 RMAs each. Both support air and missile defense and electronic warfare missions.
The smaller SPY-6(V)2, with a single rotating array, is intended for amphibious assault ships and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, while the SPY-6(V)3, with three fixed arrays, is designed for Ford-class carriers.
SPY-6 is deployed on two commissioned US Navy ships and installed on 11 more undergoing testing.
The radar is expected to equip more than 50 US Navy vessels over the next decade, enhancing defenses against air, surface, ballistic missile, and electronic warfare threats.
