Russia Responds to Drone Threat With Protective Structure for Energy Sites
Russian companies have developed a modular metal protection system designed to shield critical infrastructure from drone attacks.
Called Web, the system was developed by RT-Project Technologies, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned defense and technology conglomerate Rostec, in partnership with Standard-Elektrik and presented during a closed event in Tver, northwest of Moscow.
According to the developers, the structure is intended to protect oil storage facilities, electrical substations, and other critical infrastructure.
It can protect facilities over 25 meters (82 feet) high and can be scaled to cover large industrial sites.
The standard configuration is designed to withstand the impact of a drone weighing up to 200 kilograms (441 pounds) traveling at 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour.
Web has completed seismic stability tests, while drone-resistance testing remains ongoing.
The technology is currently being tested at several fuel and energy facilities, with no timeline for wider deployment disclosed.
Attacks on Russian Infrastructure
The announcement follows continued Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and other energy infrastructure.
Earlier this month, Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted drones over several regions, including around Moscow.
Regional authorities reported fires at an oil refinery in the southern Krasnodar region, near the Black Sea, and at two fuel storage facilities in the neighboring Rostov region along the Ukrainian border.
In June, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that repeated Ukrainian attacks on refineries had contributed to fuel shortages.
