US Counter-Drone Task Force Selects AV’s Titan MS Surveillance System
The Pentagon’s dedicated unit tasked with acquiring and fielding counter-drone solutions has tapped AeroVironment (AV) to supply its Titan MS (multi-sensor) surveillance system.
The Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401) awarded AV an $80.5-million contract, part of a broader $500-million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity sole-source contract, in support of the Pentagon’s “Domestic Shield” initiative of strengthening homeland capabilities against uncrewed system threats.
It follows a previous JIATF-401 order of a Titan Cerberus XL counter-drone system in March, also in support of Domestic Shield.
“This milestone award and the unprecedented demand we are seeing for Titan mark a historic turning point, as customers move decisively toward proven, fielded solutions that can be rapidly deployed at scale to protect civilians, servicemembers and critical assets against increasingly sophisticated drone threats,” said Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President and CEO at AV.
AI Counter-Drone Defense
AV called Titan MS its “largest, most powerful solution” within the Titan family of counter-drone solutions, which includes the portable and mission-adaptable Titan 4 launched in May 2025.
Titan MS is mounted on a 16-foot (4.9-meter) telescopic mast for fixed-site installations and weighs approximately 7,700 pounds (3,493 kilograms), including all sensors.
Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), Titan MS detects, identifies, tracks, and defeats radio frequency (RF)-controlled and autonomous drone threats, while also monitoring human and vehicle movement.
In addition, Titan MS provides operators with recorded video and detailed analytics for after-action review.
Depending on the configuration, the system’s radar can detect targets at distances of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) and simultaneously track more than 500 targets.
Meanwhile, RF emissions can be detected at horizontal ranges exceeding 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), while RF-controlled drones can be defeated at distances greater than 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles).
