The UK is reshaping Operation Interflex, its multinational training mission for Ukrainian forces, with a new framework that shifts the focus from large-scale infantry instruction to more specialized military skills.
Future courses will cover areas including aviation, medical support, engineering, and logistics.
The new program will also bring all UK-led activities for Ukrainian personnel, both in the UK and overseas, under a single structure.
According to British officials, the changes reflect Ukraine’s evolving military requirements and a growing focus on developing long-term technical capabilities.
One of the first elements of the expanded framework is the helicopter instructor qualification.
Last month, the first group of Ukrainian personnel completed a UK-based course aimed at supporting the creation of Kyiv’s own pilot training system.
Additional trainees are expected to follow as part of a broader effort to build a sustainable domestic aviation training capability.
Operation Interflex
Operation Interflex was launched in 2022 to rapidly train recruits, many of whom had little or no prior military experience.
Since then, it has become one of the largest international training efforts supporting Ukraine’s armed forces.
More than 63,000 Ukrainian personnel have completed Interflex courses, including approximately 11,000 military instructors.
Supported by military experts from 13 partner nations, the program has expanded beyond basic infantry instruction to include leadership development and other specialist training.
It has also provided mental resilience training to 375 combat psychologists.
Operation Interflex is one element of the UK’s broader support package for Kyiv.
London has committed up to 21.8 billion pounds ($29.1 billion) in assistance since 2022, including 13 billion pounds ($17.3 billion) in military aid.
