Collective Defence is acquiring counter-drone company Asterion in a deal that reflects the growing convergence of cybersecurity and air defense on modern battlefields.
The Luxembourg-based defense technology company said the transaction values the combined business at more than $1 billion, creating what the companies describe as Luxembourg’s first defense unicorn. The deal is backed by Washington-based investment firm C5 Capital and several sovereign investors.
Asterion brings a portfolio of counter-drone technologies that includes radio-frequency detection, artificial intelligence-enabled tracking, and kinetic and non-kinetic intercept capabilities.
Collective Defence contributes cyber defense, threat intelligence, and security operations capabilities built through its earlier integration of ITC Secure and IronNet.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. Once completed, the combined company plans to offer governments and critical infrastructure operators an integrated platform covering cyber threat detection, drone tracking, electronic and kinetic countermeasures, and command-and-control systems.
Collective Defence Advisory Council Chairperson Edward Newberry said the move “delivers exactly the kind of integrated capability that Western governments have said they need but have struggled to field.”
“Bringing cyber and counter-drone defense under one roof, anchored in a NATO and EU member state, gives allies a sovereign European option that is operationally tested and strategically aligned,” he added.
Buying Drone Companies
Collective Defence’s acquisition follows a broader trend of defense and security companies buying drone and counter-drone firms to quickly expand capabilities in one of the fastest-growing segments of the defense market.
In March, Red Cat Holdings acquired Apium Swarm Robotics to add autonomous swarming capabilities to its defense drones and unmanned systems.
That same month, AeroVironment purchased California-based Empirical Systems Aerospace for about $200 million to expand its drone design, prototyping, and production capabilities.
Earlier, in January, Elbit Systems UK completed its acquisition of UAV Tactical Systems to strengthen its unmanned systems development and support capabilities in the UK.
